Chitry-le-Fort is a small village, positioned 12km south west of Chablis. The marl and limestone rich kimmeridgian soils are very similar in composition to their famous neighbour and the vineyards are able to offer tight, mineral Chardonnay, Bourgogne Aligoté and Pinot Noir. In 1993 the village was awarded the appellation ‘Bourgogne Chitry’ for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The warming climate of recent years has improved the consistency of the wines and demand has soared both domestically and abroad. Aurélie and Thibault Giraudon (sister and brother) are the current generation in control at this leading domaine and are very focused on delivering fresh, elegant wines that are uniquely Chitry. There are thirty hectares in total with the main holdings being Bourgogne Chitry of both colours and an excellent Bourgogne Aligoté. They use exclusively stainless steel for ageing, only natural yeasts are used, and all picking is done by hand. As wines from the Côte d’Or surge in price, Chitry is the perfect solution for those looking for pretty, pure Burgundy at a sensible price.
